How to Use HarmonicTune

🎵 1. Getting Started

Step 1 — Open HarmonicTune and grant microphone permission when prompted. The microphone is used solely for real-time pitch detection — no audio is ever recorded or stored.

Step 2 — Select your instrument from the instrument picker. HarmonicTune supports 30+ instruments across Strings, Brass, Woodwind, Percussion, Piano, and Custom categories.

Step 3 — Play a note on your instrument. The large note display will show the detected pitch, and the needle gauge will indicate how close you are to being in tune.

HarmonicTune offers flexible tuning modes to match your workflow:

Auto Mode — Automatically detects the closest note and shows tuning accuracy. Best for quick tuning and general use.
String-by-String Mode — Manually select the target string/note for each instrument. Ideal for methodical tuning of guitars, violins, and other multi-string instruments.

Note Name — The large note display shows the detected pitch (e.g., A4, C#3).
Frequency — Shows the exact frequency in Hertz (Hz) of the detected pitch.
Cents Deviation — Shows how far you are from the target pitch in cents (±50 cents range).
Needle Gauge — A visual indicator that moves left (flat) or right (sharp). Green center means you're in tune.
Pitch History — A scrolling graph showing recent pitch stability over time.

Appearance — Choose Dark Mode, Light Mode, or Auto (follows system). Dark mode is ideal for stage use.
Haptic Feedback — Enable haptic vibration when a note is perfectly in tune.

HarmonicTune continues to listen and display pitch even when your screen locks or you switch to another app. This makes it perfect for stage performances and practice sessions where you need continuous tuning feedback.

Why does HarmonicTune ask for microphone permission?

Microphone access is used solely for real-time pitch detection to tune your instrument. Audio is processed in real time and immediately discarded — no audio is ever recorded, saved, or transmitted. You can revoke this permission anytime in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.

Does HarmonicTune record my playing?

No. HarmonicTune does not record, save, or transmit any audio. All audio processing happens in real time and is immediately discarded after pitch analysis. The only data stored are your app preferences (instrument selection, temperament, reference pitch).

Can I use HarmonicTune offline?

Yes! HarmonicTune works completely offline. It does not require an internet connection and does not make any network requests. All tuning functionality works without Wi-Fi or cellular data.

What instruments are supported?

HarmonicTune supports 30+ instruments across 6 categories: Strings (guitar, violin, cello, ukulele, etc.), Brass (trumpet, trombone, etc.), Woodwind (flute, clarinet, saxophone, etc.), Percussion, Piano, and Custom for creating your own profiles.

What is a temperament and why would I change it?

A temperament is a tuning system that defines how musical intervals are spaced. Equal Temperament (the modern standard) divides the octave into 12 equal steps. Historical temperaments like Just Intonation or Pythagorean produce purer intervals in certain keys. HarmonicTune offers 14 temperaments so you can match the tuning to your musical context.

What is the reference pitch (A4) setting?

The reference pitch sets the frequency of the A above middle C. The modern standard is A4 = 440 Hz, but some orchestras and musical traditions use 432 Hz, 442 Hz, or other values. HarmonicTune lets you calibrate this to your preference.

How accurate is HarmonicTune?

HarmonicTune uses harmonic spectrum analysis for high-precision pitch detection with ±1 cent accuracy. Actual accuracy depends on your device's microphone quality and the acoustic environment.

Where is my data stored?

All settings, custom instrument profiles, and preferences are stored locally on your device using iOS system storage. Nothing is transmitted to external servers. Uninstalling the app removes all data.

Does HarmonicTune collect any personal data?

The app isn't detecting my instrument accurately. What should I do?
